The Vicariate of Las Tunas, created by the Bishop of the Diocese, Monsignor Emilio Aranguren Echeverría, is the only Vicariate of the Diocese that has a headquarters, with an economic and administrative structure, taking into account that despite belonging to the ecclesiastical province of Holguín, Las Tunas is politically and geographically a different province from Holguín. Therefore, it was conceived to assist the pastoral work of 6 of the 8 municipalities that comprise it and contribute to their growth and organization.
In 1709, the San Jerónimo de Las Tunas Major Parish Church was built. It was the first place where the Virgin Mary was venerated. The founding of the parish, according to various criteria, took place between 1740 and 1762. Around 1863, it was composed of three naves of masonry and tiles with capacity for about 300 people. Years later, it was destroyed by the Mambi troops commanded by Vicente García and then completely rebuilt. Between 1954 and 1955, the mezzanine was built to house the priests. It wasn't until 1963 that the interior renovation, the work of Father Eulogio Vázquez, was completed, as it stands today. The current church is located within the boundaries of the old Plaza de Armas, now Vicente García Park. It is a simple building with a square-based bell tower and openings topped by semicircular arches on each side. It features Baroque-influenced ciborium decorations. Its walls are made of brick, and the roof is a paired and knurled roof with French tiles.

The current community of San Jerónimo is the largest in the province of Las Tunas. Around 300 people meet each week and have catechists to lead the various catechism groups for all ages, from children to adults. It also has a Family Pastoral, a group of Health Workers, Educators, Laypeople, a Neocatechumenal Way Community, groups of Catholic Women, and Senior Citizens, among others. Craft workshops, handicrafts, and training meetings are held.

The deteriorating state of the Church and the danger of collapse led to its closure approximately seven years ago. As a result, the celebrations were moved to two different locations. This has led to the fragmentation of the community and, consequently, weakened the participation of the faithful in activities other than the liturgical celebrations. Therefore, it is urgent and of great importance to rebuild the Main Parish Church and thereby rescue the joyful, committed, and dynamic community of San Jerónimo.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

This project aims to subject the San Jerónimo Church to restoration and rehabilitation. These are construction actions carried out to improve some of the following conditions: habitability, structural and construction safety, protection against the presence of water and humidity, its facilities, accessibility, energy efficiency, natural lighting and interior ventilation, and the dimensions of the interior spaces, among others. In this case, the renovation includes the structure, roofing, enclosures, installations, masonry and flooring finishes, carpentry, etc., so we are dealing with a comprehensive renovation.

Its technical condition is uninhabitable. The environment in which the Temple is located (in the same park), and the variety and age of the construction materials used in its construction and reconstruction from the 17th century to the present, support its restoration with significant modifications to the building. It will lose its roof, considering that its structural elements have failed due to significant deterioration in its load-bearing capacity caused by the various environmental factors to which it has been exposed over a long period of time.

The project envisioned several changes of use, such as: the office will be converted into a Chapel of the Image of Our Lady of Charity, the sacristy into a Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, and the reception area will be converted into a sacristy and reception area.

La Vicaría de Las Tunas, fue creada por el Obispo de la Diócesis, Mons. Emilio Aranguren Echeverría, es la única Vicaría de la Diócesis que cuenta con una sede, con estructura económica y administrativa, esto teniendo en cuenta que a pesar de pertenecer a la provincia eclesiástica de Holguín, Las Tunas es política y geográficamente, otra provincia diferente de Holguín, por tanto se concibe para ayudar al trabajo pastoral de 6 de los 8 municipios que la componen y contribuir a su crecimiento y organización.

En 1709 queda construido el Templo Parroquial Mayor San Jerónimo de Las Tunas, fue el primer lugar donde se venera a la Virgen María. La fundación de la parroquia, según diversos criterios fue entre 1740 y 1762. Hacia 1863 estaba compuesta por tres naves de mampostería y tejas con capacidad para unas 300 personas. Años después fue destruida por las tropas mambisas comandadas por Vicente García y luego reconstruida totalmente. Entre 1954 y 1955 se construyó el entresuelo para vivienda de los sacerdotes. No fue hasta 1963 que se concluyó la reforma interior , tal como se encuentra actualmente, obra del padre Eulogio Vázquez. El actual templo está ubicado dentro de los límites de la antigua Plaza de Armas, hoy parque Vicente García. Es un sencillo inmueble con una torre campanario de base cuadrada con vanos rematados en arcos de medio punto a cada una de sus caras. Presenta decoraciones con copones de influencia barroca. Sus muros son de ladrillos y la cubierta es de pares y nudillos con tejas francesas.

La comunidad actual de San Jerónimo es la más grande de la provincia de Las Tunas, se reúnen cada semana alrededor de 300 personas, cuenta con catequistas para guiar los diferentes grupos de catequesis de todas las edades, desde niños hasta adultos. Cuenta además con Pastoral Familiar, grupo de Trabajadores de la Salud, Educadores, Laicos, una Comunidad del Camino Neocatecumenal, grupos de Mujeres Católicas, Adulto Mayor, entre otros. Se efectúan talleres de manualidades, artesanía, encuentros de formación, etc.
El estado de deterioro del Templo y peligro de derrumbe conllevó a que cerrara sus puertas alrededor de 7 años atrás, por tal motivo las celebraciones se trasladaron hacia dos locales diferentes y esto ha provocado la fragmentación de la comunidad y por consiguiente se ha debilitado la participación de los fieles en otras actividades que no sea propiamente la celebración litúrgica. Es por ello la premura y gran importancia de reconstruir el Templo Parroquial Mayor y con ello rescatar la alegre, comprometida y dinámica comunidad de San Jerónimo.

BREVE DESCRIPCIÓN DEL PROYECTO

Este proyecto tiene como objetivo someter el templo “San Jerónimo” a acciones de restauración y rehabilitación, las cuales son acciones constructivas que se realizan para mejorar algunas de las condiciones siguientes: de habitabilidad, de seguridad estructural y constructiva, de protección contra la presencia de agua y humedades, de sus instalaciones, de la accesibilidad, de su eficiencia energética, de sus condiciones de iluminación natural y ventilación interior, de las dimensiones de los espacios interiores, entre otras. En este caso la rehabilitación incluye la estructura, cubiertas, cerramientos, instalaciones, acabados de albañilería y pavimentos, carpintería etc., por lo que estamos en presencia de una rehabilitación integral.

Su estado técnico es inhabitable. El entorno donde se encuentra enclavado el Templo (en el mismo parque), la variedad y antigüedad de los materiales de construcción que fueron utilizados en su edificación y reedificación desde el siglo XVII hasta la actualidad, avalan la restauración con importantes modificaciones en el inmueble, el mismo perderá su cubierta teniendo en cuenta que sus elementos estructurales han fallado producto de un alto deterioro de la capacidad portante de la estructura provocado por los diferentes agentes ambientales a los que ha estado expuesto durante un largo período de tiempo.

En el proyecto se concibieron algunos cambios de uso como: la oficina se convertirá en Capilla de la Imagen de la Virgen de la Caridad, la sacristía en Capilla del Santísimo y la recepción se convierte en sacristía y recepción.
